Answering some questions about Newborn Photoshoots

Hello lovely parents and soon-to-be parents! Lucy here from Lucy Rose Studios in beautiful York. If you’re thinking about a newborn photoshoot, you likely have quite a few questions.. Fear not! I’m here to answer some, if not all! So sit back, have a scroll through and let me know in the comments below if there’s anything more you would like to know!

When is the best time to take newborn photos? The best time for newborn photos is 7-10 days old. Babies are still in that gorgeous sleepy, and scrunchy phase, making it easier to capture those precious poses. Plus, they haven’t yet mastered the art of kicking off their blankets quite yet!

What should my baby wear for a newborn photoshoot? Simplicity is key. A plain onesie or just a diaper is perfect. Remember, I don’t use props, so the focus will be on your baby’s natural beauty. Besides, there’s nothing cuter than those tiny toes and chubby little legs on full display.

Anything white or neutral and simple works beautifully – I’m a sucker for a knitted little outfit! But I also have a full newborn wardrobe for you to have a look through if you would like a few different outfits! But don’t overthink it – you can do a lot with just a simple, white wrap.

How do I prepare my baby for a photoshoot? A well-fed and well-rested baby is a happy baby. Try to keep your baby awake for a little while before the session and feed them right before we start. And don’t worry about the inevitable feeds and nappy changes, there’s time for anything and everything.

Can siblings and parents be included in the photos? I can’t tell you how much I encourage everyone to get involved! A newborn photoshoot is a family affair. Big brothers and sisters, mom, and dad are all welcome to join in the fun.

This isn’t just a moment for your newborn. It is to show how far your family has come, to celebrate any siblings moving a notch up the family tree, to take some time as a couple to look at your children and go.. we did it.

I start any session with siblings, getting to know them, playing and capturing some shots just on their own so as to make it all about them too, should they want to get involved! They can show their newest sibling just how it is done.. and they love having some time to shine! Check out a bit more about the experience here!

What if my baby is fussy or won’t sleep? Don’t stress! Babies are unpredictable, and that’s perfectly okay. I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to soothe and settle your little one. We’ll take our time and go with the flow, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable experience.

How long does a newborn photoshoot take? Sessions typically last around 2-3 hours. This gives us plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, and, of course, capturing those dreamy shots. Patience is key, and we’ll ensure your baby feels comfortable throughout.

Do you offer in-home sessions? While I specialise in studio sessions to make the most of York’s gorgeous natural light, I’m happy to discuss in-home sessions if that’s what you prefer. Just let me know, and we’ll work out the details!

What if my baby has flaky skin or baby acne? Totally normal, and nothing to worry about! I have gentle editing techniques to smooth out any skin imperfections while keeping your baby’s natural charm, should you wish for it to be done. Every newborn is perfect in their own unique way.

How do you ensure my baby’s safety during the photoshoot? Safety is my top priority. I am highly trained in handling newborns and always employ safe, gentle posing techniques. I ensure that all poses are natural and comfortable for your little one.

The studio is meticulously cleaned and sanitized before each session, providing a hygienic environment for your baby. I maintain a warm and cosy studio temperature to make sure that you and your newborn are comfortable!

By combining these careful practices with a deep understanding of newborn behavior, I create a secure and soothing atmosphere where your baby’s safety and comfort come first.

How soon will we get our photos? I know you’ll be eager to see your photos, so I aim to deliver your gallery within two weeks. You’ll receive a collection of beautifully edited images that you can cherish forever and proudly share with family and friends!
