Hello lovely, I’m Lucy – your Maternity, Newborn, Baby and Family photographer based in York, North Yorkshire, bringing you all the best tips, gorgeous baby photos and experiences to make your parenting journey that little bit more special. Today, I want to run through a few of the main questions I get asked to help you decide if I am the photographer for you! If you have any other questions, please pop a comment below or send me a message and I’ll come back to you!
Where is your studio based?
My maternity, newborn and family photography studio is based in Heworth, York. I am a short walk from the centre of town and, as I have parking available, it is the perfect place to come to, leave feeling INCREDIBLE and go and have a little date afternoon or meal out to continue that feeling.
What can I expect during my newborn session?
Newborn photography sessions are very slow in pace and I go 100% off what baby wants. We start the session with a hot (I promise) cuppa and a biscuit so that you can sink in to the sofa and take some time to soak up your newborn baby. My style, as you can see, is a combination of lightly posed and natural photos. I will capture you and your baby as they are with no distractions.
If your little one decides that they just want to be on Mum for a little while, then we capture them on Mum. If they want to be on their tummy, they go on their tummy. If they decide that Dad’s shoulder is their new favourite place then that is where they go. There is no pressure to get the perfect, forced photo because every single one will come out beautifully.
When should I book my newborn session?
I recommend booking your newborn photography session when you have had your 20 week scan! It’s such an exciting way to celebrate seeing your baby growing at your scan!
When will my newborn photoshoot take place?
I pencil you in for 7 days after your due date as the best time to shoot your little one is between 7 and 10 days whilst they are still all squishy. Then we keep in touch and you let me know when your little one is here! Once they have arrived (as most don’t appear on their due date!), we adjust our dates accordingly!
How long will my newborn session last?
How long is a piece of string…! This can range from 1-3 hours depending on your little one. If they sleep through the session, it will be closer to the one hour mark but if they need a couple of 45 minute long feeds, it’s going to be a little longer… I don’t put a time limit on my newborn sessions, they take as long as they take and I will never rush you through it.
Can my other children come to my newborn session?
YES. Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes some more. Now sessions with siblings are definitely a little more chaotic than those without siblings but we wouldn’t have it any other way! I tell my families to ABSOLUTELY bring older siblings along however, if you are able to, I recommend having someone collect them midway through.
The first few weeks after bringing your baby home can be quite overwhelming for older siblings. A photoshoot can be such a fun way to get them involved and make them feel like they are also playing a new and exciting role. I always start off by taking photos of them on their own because they deserve to have their moment to shine too! We then move on to capturing all of your babies together, then we get you involved!
Once they have been collected, we then focus on you and your newest little one. If they are not able to be collected, I have a little play room with a toy kitchen and other bits that they are able to play with, should you wish to use it. This also provides you with time to soak in your baby – often, parents tell me it is the first time they have been able to do so since coming home between the midwives and family or hospital visits and it is VERY welcomed.
Do you take feeding photos during my newborn session?
Yes, I absolutely do. I will always offer to capture you feeding your baby whether they are breast or bottle feeding. It is an incredible thing to witness and you’ll never regret having those moments captured.
Do I need to bring any clothes to my newborn session?
I have a wide variety of outfits for Mum, Dad and Baby so you don’t need to worry too much! But I would always recommend bringing something so that you know you will feel comfortable. Upon booking, you will recieve a full welcome guide that has all of my top tips in for wardrobe!
Do I have to choose my package before my newborn session?
Nope, not at all. You don’t need to choose a package or pay your final payment until after you have seen the watermarked gallery of your newborn photography session.
How long is it after my session will I receive the watermarked gallery?
I aim to get your gallery to you within 1 to 2 weeks. These will have the initial edit for viewing only – following your selection of images, I will go through and hand edit all images to ensure they are perfect for you.
Before I start this process, you can also request any little tweaks that you might want.Do you provide prints and wall art?
I sure do, my luxury albums and prints are available following your shoot – during your shoot, I will show you some examples should you wish to see them.
Newborn photography at my York photography studio is a gorgeous way to capture the magic of your growing family. These sessions aren’t just about photos; they’re about freezing moments together as a family.
