Maternity Photography Tips for Expecting Mothers

Hello lovely! If you’re new here, I’m Lucy – your maternity, newborn, baby, and family photographer based in York, North Yorkshire. I’m here to share bullet pointed top tips and gorgeous photos to make your journey into parenthood even more special. Today, let’s chat about capturing that beautiful pregnancy glow with maternity photography.

When should I be booking my maternity photoshoot in for?

Timing is key to showcase your bump! I recommend scheduling your maternity session between 28 and 36 weeks. It all depends on how comfortable you are, the number of babies you are carrying and whether there are any medical considerations but we like to leave it as late as we can so your bump is beautiful and round. Every pregnancy is unique, so we can adjust the timing to suit how you’re feeling!

What should I wear?!

Your attire plays a significant role in highlighting your bump and making you feel ab-fab, darling. Here are some suggestions:

  • Form fitting dresses: These accentuate your silhouette and celebrate your bump and curves.
  • Maxi dresses: I LOVE a maxi or a midi – the flowing fabrics add a touch of elegance and movement to your photos and never fail to be flattering. If you have to choose ONE, then this is definitely the one for me!
  • Simple colours: You’ll be able to tell from my website and socials that I am a neutral gal, through and through. Whites, creams, beige. brown and anything in between keep the focus on you and your bump without distractions. I also love that this allows you to seamlessly place your images in any and all rooms, no matter the decor.
  • Comfort is KEY: Choose outfits that make you feel confident and at ease. No one needs to look back at photos and remember having to pull at things, adjust things or a feeling of not being themselves. Dress like you.. having a reaaaally good day.

I have SO many dresses you can use but feel free to bring multiple outfits to the session, and we can decide together what works best!

Can I bring items with me to photograph?

YES, of course. Adding personal touches can make your maternity photos even more special. Things that I typically consider and photograph are:

  • Ultrasound images: A beautiful way to include a glimpse of your little one before they’ve arrived (and a great way to turn your ultrasounds into a momento.. other than them being shoved in a memory box).
  • Baby shoes and clothing: This is always a goodie – popping the shoes on your bump is such a sweet image and then we can capture your little one in the clothes when they arrive.
  • Heirlooms: Items like a cherished blanket, toy or jewellery from a loved one can be a subtle way of having them involved when they’re not able to be.
  • Seasonal bits and bobs: Incorporating flowers, leaves, or other natural items that reflect the time of year (and I LOVE a bouquet!)

These objects can help tell your story and add a lovely depth to your images.

I’m not a poser.. can you help?

Don’t worry about posing – that’s my job! I’ll guide you through natural and flattering poses that highlight your beauty and the connection with your baby. Incase you want to get practising beforehand, here is some that I use a lot:

  • Hands on your bump: A natural pose that draws attention to your bump and creates an intimate feel.
  • Profile shots: Showcasing the curve of your belly from the side, I like to include the Dads in this one!
  • Looking at your bump: You;ll notice I don’t do a lot of smiling at the camera photos, I like to stick to candid images – I’ll show you exactly how to look down towards your bump without giving me a good old shot of your roots.
  • Movement: Walking or swaying adds a dynamic, candid feel to your images!

Remember, the goal is to capture your authentic self, so just relax and enjoy the experience with me.

Can I bring my partner and bigger tots?

Maternity sessions are a wonderful opportunity to capture the love and excitement of your growing family. Including your partner and other children can add depth and emotion to your photos. We will:

  • Capture candid interactions: Moments of laughter, hugs, and shared anticipation – your shoot will just be another family day out, it’s lots of playing and dancing around, so that you won’t get bored!
  • Sibling involvement: Older siblings kissing or talking to the bump will always be my favourite! And such a special way to look back at your last few weeks with them before they gained a sibling.
  • Couple portraits: Dads get it SO easy during my shoots (which is why they ALWAYS leave feeling relieved that it was actually good fun). The focus is on Mum but every few poses, Dad gets bought in for a kiss and a cuddle and is then sent back to his coffee on the sofa (unless he wants to be more involved, of course!).

These images will be cherished reminders of this special time for your entire family.

Should I do it outside or in the studio?

Deciding between an outdoor or studio session depends on your personal preference and the style you’re envisioning. It’s totally up to you!

  • Outdoor Sessions: These utilise natural, warm, glowy light and scenic backdrops at my location in York. I only shoot at golden hour (the last few hours before the sun is setting) so depending on the time of year, the time of day really varies! In winter it is around 2pm but in the summer it is around 7pm.
  • Studio Sessions: Offer a controlled environment with neutral lighting, allowing for more intimate and classic portraits. Weather isn’t a concern, and we can create a cozy, comfortable space tailored to your vision.

Both options have their unique benefits, and I’m happy to discuss what suits you best.
