Hello lovely! If you’re new here, I’m Lucy – your Maternity, Newborn, Baby, and Family photographer based in York, North Yorkshire. I’m here to share top tips and gorgeous photos to make your parenting journey even more special. Today, let’s chat about how to create a relaxing experience during your newborn photoshoot.
Setting the mood with a calm, comforting environment
Creating a serene atmosphere is genuinely the key to a successful newborn session. Babies really do feed off the atmosphere around them – if you’re stressed and anxious, they will feel that! That is why in my home studio, I have reeeeally focused on ensuring a peaceful and calming space with soft music and natural lighting (and lots of biscuits), ensuring both you and your baby feel at ease.
This tranquil setting helps capture those heartwarming images you’ll genuinely cherish forever.
Tips for feeding and soothing your baby beforehand
A content baby leads to a smoother session.
If possible, I recommend feeding your little one about two hours before arriving and then waiting to feed again (unless they need it of course – don’t ignore their cues) until after you arrive can help ensure they’re ready for a full feeding just before we start. This results in a sleepy and satisfied baby, perfect for those adorable, peaceful shots!
Using white noise and soft lighting
To mimic the familiar sounds and environment of the womb, I often use white noise during sessions. Both my girls loved it and I’m sure your little one will too!
This, along with the soft and natural lighting, helps soothe your baby, making them more comfortable and relaxed throughout the shoot.
Understanding the natural flow of newborn sessions
Newborn sessions are unique in that we follow the baby’s lead. I will never, ever rush a session. For newborns, I don’t book any other shoots that day because I don’t want us to be on the clock. There is NOTHING worse than getting 30 minutes into a feeding session and being felt like you have to pull them off. I will never.. whilst also ensuring that your water is topped up and you have a snack in both hands!
I really do allow ample time for feeding, changing, and comforting, ensuring there’s no rush.
My flexible approach helps capture genuine moments, reflecting your baby’s natural rhythms and personality.
Being patient and embracing breaks when needed
Patience is essential during newborn photography. And I have it by the bucketload (unless you’re my husband)..
It’s completely normal to take plenty of breaks for feeding, changing, or simply soothing your baby.
Embracing these pauses ensures that both you and your little one remain comfortable, leading to more authentic and beautiful images.
Trusting me to capture authentic moments
As your newborn photographer, my goal is to document the genuine connections and tender moments between you and your baby. Don’t force it and definitely don’t act – I want you to be you.
By creating a relaxed environment and guiding you through the process, I aim to capture images that truly reflect this special time in your life.
If you’re expecting or have recently welcomed a new addition to your family in the Yorkshire region, I’d be honored to help you capture these priceless moments. Feel free to reach out, and let’s create something beautiful together!
