Hello lovely! If you’re new here, I’m Lucy – your maternity, newborn, baby, and family photographer based in York, North Yorkshire. I’m here to share top tips and gorgeous photos to make your parenting journey even more special. Today, let’s chat about why every mother deserves to be in family photos.
Overcoming insecurities and embracing the moment
As mums, we often find ourselves behind the camera, capturing precious moments of our children and partners. And believe me, I get it. We often feel self-conscious, especially during the transformative journey of motherhood. Our bodies often change, our brain changes with it and we can find ourselves almost a different person. I’m right there with every single one of you who felt something akin to this.
BUT (and it’s a big but), it’s essential to recognize that these moments are worth preserving, and your presence in family photos is invaluable. Embracing the moment, despite any insecurities, allows you to celebrate the beauty of your motherhood journey.
Your children don’t care what you used to look like. Honestly, I doubt they care what you look like now. All they know is that when Mummy is having a good time, her smile is infectious and it makes them feel good. That memory is worth preserving. You’ll look back in years to come and be SO glad that you did.
The importance of capturing your role as a Mum
Your role as a mum is central to your family’s story. They likely wouldn’t be who they are without you.
Including yourself in family photographs showcases the love, care, and dedication you pour into your family daily.
These images serve as a testament to your involvement and create a visual narrative that your children will cherish as they grow older, reminding them of the special bond you share. Picture yourself, in decades to come, sat at the Christmas table with your grandchildren showing them their parents laughing with you – absolutely priceless.
Setting an example of self-love for your children
This for me is a biggie.
By stepping in front of the camera, you demonstrate self-love and confidence to your children. And I mean doing so without then looking at the photos and criticising how you look or picking apart everything. This one I have had to REALLY unlearn.. it’s been a journey but I now am very proud of the fact that I don’t look at how my body looks in photos. I look at my smile. I look at my children. Because nothing else matters to anyone else!
This act teaches them the importance of embracing themselves and valuing every family member’s presence.
It reinforces the idea that everyone deserves to be seen and celebrated, fostering a positive self-image and encouraging them to appreciate their own unique qualities.
How I will highlight your best self
Working with a professional photographer can alleviate many of the concerns you might have about being in photos.
As a professional, I know how to use lighting, angles, and poses to highlight your best features and capture genuine expressions.
My goal is to create a relaxed environment where you feel comfortable, allowing your natural beauty and the authentic connections with your family to shine through.
Letting go of perfection
Family life is beautifully imperfect, and that’s what makes it genuine!
Letting go of the pursuit of perfection allows for us to capture authentic moments. The laughter, the cuddles, the spontaneous interactions, that truly reflect your family’s unique dynamics.
These candid shots often become the most treasured, as they encapsulate the essence of your everyday life together. So don’t come to your photoshoot and act, don’t tell everyone to sit there and smile, because that isn’t what you want preserving.
