Answering all of your Maternity Photoshoot Questions – York Studio

Hello lovely, I’m Lucy – your Maternity, Newborn, Baby and Family photographer based in York, North Yorkshire, bringing you all the best tips, gorgeous baby photos and experiences to make your parenting journey that little bit more special. Today, I want to run through a few of the main questions I get asked to help you decide if I am the photographer for you! If you have any other questions, please pop a comment below or send me a message and I’ll come back to you!

Where is your studio based?

My maternity, newborn and family photography studio is based in Heworth, York. I am a short walk from the centre of town and, as I have parking available, it is the perfect place to come to, leave feeling INCREDIBLE and go and have a little date afternoon or meal out to continue that feeling.

What can I expect during my maternity session?

Maternity photography sessions are the perfect way to capture the incredible journey that you are on. We start by having a little sit down, a cuppa and get to know one another – don’t worry, I won’t just throw you in front of the camera! We capture you, your growing bump and your family should you choose to bring them along in beautiful outfits using natural lighting to bring that soft glow.

When should I book my maternity session?

I recommend booking your maternity photography session when you have had your 20 week scan! It’s such an exciting way to celebrate seeing your baby growing at your scan.

When will my maternity session take place?

For your maternity photography session, I recommend getting booked in between 28 and 36 weeks – ideally the later the better so your bump is nice and big but not too late so that you are getting uncomfortable! Every pregnancy is different so I like to leave it up to you roughly when that little sweet spot is!

Can I choose between an indoor or outdoor session?

ABSOLUTELY! I love both – they offer very different but amazing things. I love both styles so it totally depends on what you are looking for!

With my indoor shoots at my York-based studio, you get the comfort of a warm and cosy sofa, lots of decaf tea and biscuits and a gorgeous, and a neutral backdrop that can show off you and your beautiful bump.

With my outdoor shoots, I take these at sunset so depending on the time of year, this can range from 8pm in the summer to 3pm in the winter..! I don’t shoot at any time other than sunset to ensure we get a beautiful, orangey, sunset glow. These are perfect for those who are comfortable getting outdoors together and having a fun, loving session together to celebrate you and your baby.

How long will my maternity session last?

This varies depending on how long it takes us to finish that cuppa, how many outfits you want to capture and if there are any older siblings coming along! Usually, it doesn’t take much longer than an hour but if other kiddos are also attending, we are in no rush and it takes as long as it takes. As a Mum, I don’t want anybody feeling the pressure of having to make a toddler behave!

Can my partner and other children come to my maternity session?

YES. Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes some more. I have lots of Mums-to-be who want to take their maternity shoot as a small window of time for themselves. It can be very empowering to show up alone and have beautiful imagery taken of you and your body.

That being said, I’m a sucker for a swooning soon-to-be Dad helping Mum feeling confident and littlies kissing bumps and giggling as they feel the kicks.

There is no wrong way to do a shoot – just know that whoever comes, you will get the most beautiful images for you to look back on for decades to come.

Do I need to bring any clothes to my maternity session?

I have a wide variety of outfits so you don’t need to worry too much! But I would always recommend bringing something so that you know you will feel comfortable. Upon booking, you will receive a full welcome guide that has all of my top tips in for wardrobe!

Do I have to choose my package before my maternity session?

Nope, not at all. You don’t need to choose a package or pay your final payment until after you have seen the watermarked gallery of your photography session.

How long is it after my session will I receive the watermarked gallery?

I aim to get your gallery to you within 1 to 2 weeks. These will have the initial edit for viewing only – following your selection of images, I will go through and hand edit all images to ensure they are perfect for you.

Before I start this process, you can also request any little tweaks that you might want.

Do you provide prints and wall art?

I sure do, my luxury albums and prints are available following your shoot – during your maternity shoot, I will show you some examples should you wish to see them!

Maternity photography at my York photography studio is a gorgeous way to capture the magic of your growing family. These sessions aren’t just about photos; they’re about freezing moments together as a family.
