Newborn photography in North Yorkshire – in York and Harrogate
There’s something especially lovely about welcoming a family to the studio with their second baby. Baby H, a beautiful little girl just under two weeks old. She snuggled so peacefully into Mum’s arms, while her proud big brother gently peeked over her shoulder. The soft, natural light in the studio created the dreamiest atmosphere for capturing these moments.
Where is the studio based?
If you’re local to the York area and looking for a peaceful setting for your baby’s portraits, my home studio is just the spot. It’s quiet, warm, and intentionally designed to be a calm little pocket of stillness for you to relax and enjoy your session – whether you’re here for newborn photos, maternity portraits or a first birthday cake smash.
When should I book my newborn session?
The newborn phase changes so quickly, and it’s lovely to capture your little one in those first few weeks while they’re still curled up and sleepy. I recommend booking your session for when your baby is between 5 and 10 old. That said, every baby is different and I’ll always work with you to find the right timing.
My approach to motherhood photography
I’m drawn to the stillness. The way a newborn naturally tucks into mum’s chest, how tiny fingers curl around yours, or the soft way siblings look on with curiosity and love.
I work with natural light to keep everything soft and organic. It creates a timeless feel that highlights the femininity of motherhood and the delicacy of those early newborn days. Sessions are relaxed, with no pressure – just space for you to be yourselves and soak in the moment.
What to wear for your newborn session
One of the most common questions I get.. And styling really does play a big part in creating that calm, timeless look you see in my photographs.
Here are a few simple tips (but also don’t forget, I have a studio wardrobe for baby and Mum!):
– Neutrals always work best – whites, creams, beige, and warm earthy tones all photograph beautifully.
– For Mum, flowing maxi dresses or soft knits look elegant yet relaxed – perfect for cuddles.
– For baby, a simple white vest or sleepsuit is all you need, I have a baby clothes addiction so you know I’ve got enough to dress a small baby army.
– For siblings, try to coordinate rather than match – think soft textures and similar tones.
– For Dad, chinos and a plain top works really well or some jeans and a white shirt all work perfect.
Try to steer away from strong patterns, logos or bold colours like black, red or yellow – they can distract from the connection and emotion we’re aiming to capture.
If you’re expecting and thinking about newborn photography in the York area, I’d love to welcome you into the studio. These early days are so fleeting, and it’s such a joy to help families hold onto them forever through beautiful, heartfelt imagery.
