Welcoming a new life into the world is one of the most precious moments a family will ever experience. We sat down with Lucy from Lucy Rose Studios in York to talk about her passion for capturing those fleeting newborn days, what makes her sessions unique, and her best advice for new parents.
Q: Lucy, what first inspired you to become a newborn photographer?
A: I’ve always been drawn to capturing real, emotive moments, but after becoming a mum to two littles myself, I truly understood just how quickly those newborn days pass. I wanted to give parents a way to hold onto those memories forever. Photography became my way of telling their story, the tiny fingers, the sleepy smiles, the way a new family fits together in those first days.
Q: How would you describe your photography style?
A: Soft, natural, and timeless. I love working with neutral tones and gentle textures that don’t distract from the beauty of your baby. Whether I’m in my cosy York studio or in a family’s home, I aim to create images that feel warm and full of love. Photos you’ll treasure for decades.
Q: What can parents expect from a session with you?
A: First and foremost, a calm and relaxed environment. I keep my studio warm and comfortable, and I work entirely at your baby’s pace. If they need feeding, cuddles, or a nappy change, we pause. I guide parents through every step so they can simply enjoy the experience rather than stress about it.
Q: Some parents worry their baby might be unsettled on the day. What’s your advice?
A: It’s completely normal! I’ve photographed hundreds of newborns, and no two sessions are alike. Wriggles, little cries, or wide-awake moments are all part of the story. Sometimes the most beautiful photos come from unscripted moments, a yawn, a stretch, or your baby’s eyes looking right into yours.
Q: Do you have a favourite moment to capture?
A: I love the in-between moments, honestly.. when mum and dad are gazing at their baby without even realising it, or when a sibling softly strokes the baby’s hair. Those moments are pure emotion and connection, and they often become my clients’ favourite images. That and the wrapped up pose, I think it just is so beautiful and captures that moment in time.
Q: What advice would you give to parents thinking about newborn photography?
A: Book early! The best time for a newborn session is within the first 5–10 days after birth, when babies are sleepiest and most curly. That said, it’s never too late, older newborns still make for gorgeous, more alert portraits. And remember, you don’t need to bring anything except yourselves. I have everything you’ll need here.
Q: Finally, what do you hope parents feel when they look at their photos years from now?
A: I want them to be transported right back to those early days, the smell of their baby’s skin, the weight of them sleeping in their arms. Photos are more than pictures; they really are just a time machine. My goal is for every family to feel the same rush of love they felt the day they first held their baby.
