If you’ve just found out you’re expecting (or you’re already counting down the final weeks), congratulations! This is such a huge, emotional chapter. And somewhere between choosing prams and googling baby names at 2am, the question of newborn photos usually pops up..
“When do we actually need to book a newborn photographer?”
The short answer? Much earlier than you think.
But don’t worry, I’ll walk you through exactly why timing matters and how to make sure you don’t miss out on committing this time to memory.
The Ideal Time to Book: Around the Second Trimester
Most newborn photographers recommend booking your session during your second trimester (around 12–28 weeks pregnant).
Why so early?
Because newborn photography is a more ‘limited availability’ service. Each baby is scheduled around their due date, not a fixed calendar slot. That means we only take on a certain number of babies per month to stay flexible when little ones arrive early or late (because they always do!).
Booking early gives you:
It’s one less thing to think about when you’re sleep-deprived and running on snack crumbs and nursery prep lists.

Why Timing Matters So Much for Newborn Photos
The “newborn look” – those sleepy curls, tiny wrinkled toes, and milk-drunk expressions – is VERY short-lived. Much more short-lived than you would think.. it only lasts a couple of weeks, three at most.
Most photographers aim to photograph babies when they are:
5 to 14 days old.
During this window, babies are typically:
After two weeks, babies absolutely still photograph beautifully – but they tend to be more alert, stretchier, and less likely to stay asleep through gentle posing.
Neither is “better,” just different. But if you love those classic curled-up newborn images, booking ahead helps you hit that sweet spot.

What If You Haven’t Booked Yet?
First of all – don’t panic.
Life with a new baby is unpredictable, and many parents only think about photos after baby arrives. That’s completely okay.
You still have options:
The most important thing isn’t the exact age – it’s capturing this chapter while it’s still fresh.

Booking Before Baby Arrives: How It Actually Works
One of the most common worries parents have is:
“How can I book a date if I don’t know when baby will arrive?”
This is where newborn photography is a bit different.
When you book, you’re not locking in a fixed date. Instead, you’re reserving:
Once your baby arrives, you simply message your photographer and confirm the actual session date based on how things are going.
It’s designed to be flexible – because newborn life is anything but predictable.
If You’re in York or Nearby
If you’re based in or around York, you’ll likely find that photographers book up quite quickly, especially in spring and autumn when baby season peaks.
That’s why many local families secure their sessions early in pregnancy – not because it’s required, but because it guarantees they don’t miss out on their preferred photographer’s style and availability.
Signs You Should Book Sooner Rather Than Later
You might want to get in touch early if:
I’ve never met anyone who regret booking early – they regret not doing it when they had the headspace..

What Booking Early Gives You (Beyond a Date)
Booking early means:
Because those first weeks go in a blur – feeding, sleeping, cuddling, repeating – and suddenly your baby is already changing.
Final Thoughts
If you take one thing away from this, let it be this:
You don’t need to have everything figured out – just don’t leave booking your newborn photographer too late if you know it’s something you want.
The best time to book is usually before baby arrives, ideally in your second trimester. But even if you’ve missed that window, it’s never too late to ask.
Because these early days don’t last – but photographs do.
And one day, you’ll look back at them and wonder how someone so tiny ever fitted in your arms at all.
