When people hear first birthday photoshoot, they usually think of one thing… cake.
Sticky fingers, buttercream-covered cheeks. A baby looking deeply offended that everyone is clapping whilst they poke a sponge with one finger.
And yes… cake smash photos are VERY cute.
But if I’m honest (oops no… if I’m being real, much better), first birthday sessions are about so much more than cake.
Behind the balloons and buttercream is something much bigger.
A whole year.
Your baby’s first year. YOUR year.
And if you’re anything like most parents who walk through my studio doors…
You’re still wondering how on earth that happened so fast.

One Minute They’re Newborns…
It’s one of the strangest things about parenthood.
The days feel so long. The nights even longer.
But somehow, in the middle of the nappies, bottles, weaning, regressions, nursery rhymes, and trying to drink a hot cup of tea before it goes cold…
A whole year disappears.
One minute they’re curled up on your chest.
Tiny enough to fit in one arm.
Sleepy and squishy and brand new and then suddenly…
They’re standing, laughing.. showing opinions and throwing toast on the floor.
And turning one.
It happens in the blink of an eye.
That’s what first birthday photos are really about.
Not the cake.
The chapter.

It’s About Celebrating Everything You’ve Survived Too
Because let’s not pretend this first year is just about baby. It’s been about you too.
You’ve survived sleep deprivation, cluster feeding, teething, Google searches at 2am. Cold cups of coffee and tiny socks that mysteriously vanish in the wash.
And somewhere in all of that…
You kept a tiny human alive.
That deserves celebrating too, if you ask me.
A first birthday session isn’t just a marker for baby.
It’s a quiet little pause to say:
Look at how far we’ve all come.
And sometimes mums need that reminder just as much as the photographs.

It’s Not Really About The Cake Smash
This surprises a lot of parents.
Because yes, there’s cake.
And yes, sometimes babies absolutely dive in face first like they’ve trained for this moment their whole life.
But sometimes?
They stare at it like it’s deeply suspicious.
Some poke it.
Some cry.
Some eat one tiny crumb and decide they’re done.
Some just want to sit there looking adorable in their little outfit and completely ignore the cake altogether.
And all of that is absolutely fine.
Because the cake smash is never the whole story.
At Lucy Rose Studios, first birthday sessions are about capturing your baby as they are right now.
Their little expressions, their cheeky personality, those tiny teeth, the wobbly standing, the clapping, the giggles… The way they screw their nose up when they laugh.
That’s the magic.
The cake is just a bonus.

These Are The Photos You’ll Look Back On And Say…
“Oh my goodness, look at their little face.”
“I’d forgotten that expression.”
“Remember when they did that clap?”
“I can’t believe how tiny they still were.”
Because by one, babies have changed so much.
They’re no longer that sleepy newborn you brought home.
So.. yes, there’ll be mess but underneath all of that is something much bigger.
A celebration of:
That’s why first birthday sessions matter.
Not because of the cake.
Because of what the cake represents.
A whole year of loving this tiny person.
A whole year of memories.
A whole year you somehow made it through.
And that deserves remembering.
